To whom has any tips,
As in my 55 years I previously owned a dozen or so AMC's. In the last 3 years sold out and have now owned 4 Oldsmobiles - 2 79 Hurst Olds - 88 Cultass Classic and now to keep for myself a 86 442.
When removing back glass trim - the lower plastic clips exploded to where I don't know what they look like or how they work. I guess they were clipped on under the aluminum under the window panel that can be screwed off.
Obviously the side clips and top are steel like AMC or any others.
What does the lower clip look like and how are they installed?
Anybody's help would be appreciated as I'm not stumped often but am this time.

Is that what your talking about? I think those hold the bottom trim on.

Thanks for a quick reply. Not sure. What car is this picture from? My 1986 442 doesn't have any screw or stud under the aluminum filler panel under the rear window that looks like that.

I think he's talking about these:

8 clips needed per car. They go in with the rounded side down, so the clip part will be exposed to hold the trim piece. That painted section on your 442 should be steel, not aluminum. It's flimsy enough to make you think it's aluminum. Make sure you don't break any of the black plastic mounts either, 3 per car. Those are p/n 20655818. They're pretty sturdy, but you can easily strip threads on the little screws mounting into the front of those things.

There is a set or two on ebay I see if you need them. Again, these are the trim piece retainers that mounts the trim piece to the car itself.

The umbrella clips are part number 3066259. They always get brittle and break. GM used to sell them in a box of 10. They weren't cheap even back then. Over 2.20 each clip with a discount.

These are cheap for a set of 8, but they're repros. Not sure of the quality at all.

If you can get your local dealer to go through VPI (vintage parts) you can get GM ones them through them. Not sure of the price, though. They may be in a box of 10 still.

Those weren't mine. They were from another thread of someone doing this exact thing. They only had 6 clips available to them, however. But there are slots for 8 clips and the parts book calls for 8 per car.
