Picked up an 86 BR 2004R with unknow miles in a package deal. Pulled pan fluid was dark cherry red and did not smell burnt. Besides whats in the pan trans looks very clean, stator support looks like new.
What do you all think about whats in the pan? Ive seen worse in TH350's pans and trans still ran very well. This is my first time in a 2004R. Not sure if this is good bad or ugly.
Im wanting to put it in for now to get project to move, plan is to drop it back out down the road and build it up with good parts.

It does look like it already has a hardened stator support. Probably a good indication that it's been gone thru. Good score.

It's total garbage. Give it to me and I can clear up some of your garage space. :)

Nah, it might have been run hard, but it looks in very decent condition from the pics. Can't say anything for the guts, but usually you can tell if there's a ton of clutch plate material and mealflakes everywhere it's probably a hunk of crap. I'm not seeing that here. Seriously, so far, it looks like a good score.

I guess that black stuff has to be friction material? Pry open the filter and see what's inside. That's what I did with my 4L85E....

The black dots were a clutch (friction) coming apart. The metal is aluminum, from babbitt bearings (bushings). The builder said all units will have some metal in them. I don't know enough to make a recommendation on whether to use it or not. I'd just pry that filter open if you still have it an see what's inside for more information.

I finally got arount to putting it in the SS for a test, put a gauge on it and had really good pressures, took it for a spin and Dang it shifts hard! Even with a tired old 305.
Gonna have to build up the *ss end now lol

Hoarder. (Great planning!) That should be enough for the rest of your future fleet. Or, you'll make a bunch of friends!

I got the last 4 in a bundle deal from a retiring mechanic 45+ years. He said they all worked. He has 6 bays 4 bays full of racks with of all sorts of good parts from late 60 thru the 80s.
Worked out of the other 2 bays, awesome guy.
I went to FL on an install, was only going to get a HO dash and door panels, came back with a trailer full of parts for 1800 bucks.
I could have dropped 5k at his shop easy. Lol

That must be why I can't find one of those for like 200 miles around me.
