Hope someone can help me here. Saw some smoke coming from under the hood after a real short drive the other day. Pop the hood and the ends of my wires that go to the starter were on fire. Looks like it was the Big wire with the 2 fusible links on it that was on fire. The small 8mm wire wasnt the culprit. WTF is going on here? Bad fusible link? bad ground? should I replace fusible link and just put a push button starter switch inside the car? man help me get the olds back on the road.

It sounds like you have a short in the starter itself. If you had a short in the wires behind the fusable link that link would have blown (melted) before any fire started. I'm glad you caught that before any major fire damage happened

that would be odd though. just had the starter rebuilt last week. Could it be maybe the end of the wire that was touching something? or you gonna stick with your 1st idea?

look at the big wire? yikes. Im still not sold on the rebuild, although the shop I went too Im told has a good reputation for rebuilding them. :?

Anyone can make a mistake no matter how much experience they have...unless they are a robot. If the shop did make a mistake on the rebuild and they have a good reputation they'll probably help you out.

Just curious....why do you think the starter is shorting out? that way when I go to starter shop in the morning I no how to address them. :blam:

like I said previously "If you had a short in the wires behind the fusable link that link would have blown (melted) before any fire started. "....I doubt there was a short between the fusable links and the starter since if there was the wire would have been fried at the spot of the short. If the main wire from the battery had caused the short your battery would be dead. If you had no problem with wiring before the starter was rebuilt why would you not think that the starter was the problem?

and before you take the starter to the shop why not head to a car parts retailer that check the starters for free....then you may have a better idea of what's wrong....if anything is.

good sh*t . Im gonna swing it by autozone for a free check. then Ill take the info with me to the place that rebuilt it. I new I should have just bought a new one.

new ones have to be built by someone so mistakes can happen even with a new one or a factory rebuilt. Personally I would rather deal with someone locally who runs his own shop so I can deal with the actual person who does or overlooks the work. Franchise store warranties are ok but I prefer relying on someone's reputation.

thats true. The shop that rebuilt it will probaly be real cool and make sure Im happy. I just want an unbias opinion from someone else to check the starter. I still got my reciept and all so Im not to worried. More worried about my broken foot than the starter right now anyways.
