86 Cutlass....starter fire....

Who installed the starter? Sounds more like a loose connection with the battery cable than a possible starter problem. Still wouldn't hurt to have the starter checked.

Yeah, the terminal on the starter for the batt wire might have either been loose or at a bad angle, And all it took was a hard bump to shake it a little and ground it out on the block.

I think if the positive cable from the battery grounded out that would have shut the car down immediately...

Yeah, me too, but about 5 or 6 months ago, mine did exactly as I described. Almost had a car-b-q outside the White House. FYI water and blowing will eventually put out a electrical fire, if praying is involved.

I grounded out the positive cable working on the exhaust with the car not running. It melted the negative side post right off the red top.

From that day on, I carry a fire extinguisher in my car, right in the backseat.

man Ive been swamped with doctor visits this past week. Now that I can move around a little Im gonna address it today. Heres my pan of action. 1. Check starter at Autozone. 2. Wrap all the wires in elect. tape and check em well. 3. If start is cool Im gonna put it back in and hope for the best. If it acts up again Im gonna have to swap out those wires and the starter. Ill keep ya posted. and yea I now keep a fire exting. in the cutty.

OK OK....Gather round story time. I went out to the cutty today and did this. Wrapped all my wires at the ends were they seemed to be bare showing. Checked the starter and its A OK..Checked all wires for contonuity and they are A OK..So I pieced everything back together and KA BOOM BABY. FIRED RIGHT UP!!! YEEEE MF HAAA!! Im gonnna fix the transmission line leak tonight and then most likely have to take off the intake next weekand and hit it with some rtv. Dam I love this website. Thanks fellas for the input. and for those that didnt help...eat a fat one.haha im joking :wtf:
