Well after stripping down the 87 442 I have seen rust that no man should be allowed to see. The frame should be going out this week to get sandblasting. My question today is has anyone sourced a replacement set of these rear bumper shocks? I could try to clean them up but not sure if available if it would be better to just replace.

You will need 2 of the 22016700 rear bumper shocks. Superseded by p/n 22041720.

You will need to save the rear inside frame brackets, or get some replacements of those. Not sure how far gone yours are. GM p/n 10018503. Fits front or rear, left or right. 4 per car. Good thing is, 78-88 A/G47 Oldses use the same shock. Previously under p/n 22009008 until 1980.

Thanks for that info and part numbers, just wasn’t aware if they are actually available anywhere. I am still searching but hadn’t seen them yet. As always it’s great to get the feedback.

There was a used set on ebay (I think) but they wanted 80 bucks for something that rivaled yours in the shape they were in. Pitted and pretty crusty inside the frame area. But they also said they came off a Monte Carlo. Be careful, only A-body 78-80 Chevy G-wagons will interchange from the Chevy cars. It can get confusing fast. No Montes in this area. Regal will, though.

BTW, you do not want any that have been compressed hard, i.e., off a wrecked car that the bumper got whacked. VERY light bumper taps is all these shocks were designed for and can take. If they've been hit hard, they tend to 1) leak, and/or 2) don't return back to their original length.

Ran up on a pair of FRONT shock absorbers. Ain't cheap, but what is anymore?

Thanks for checking these out I wasn’t sure if they were going to work on mine. But I’ll check them out again.

The ebay listing I posted for those front "MU" shocks, 22016704 are exactly what fits your 87. And a lot of other front bumpers for Cutlass.

Here's a build sheet clipping for an 87 Supreme. MU code for the fronts. MR codes for the rear, which is p/n 22016700.
