87 el camino smog pump locked up

hey guys, does the air pump on the motor need to be hooked up for proper running on a stock 305? I've been having rough idle/stalling problems and wondering if the pump is to blame, it locked up years ago so I just took the belt off, I assumed it was just to heat up the catalytic converter (also no longer have)

It just pumps "fresh" air into the exhaust. Just check the vacuum lines to rule them out for leaks.
