I've replaced the compressor seal 3 times in my original (R4) a/c compressor & finally replaced the compressor all together because of a leaky front seal. After 1 year, the new compressor started slinging oil & I am now looking to see if there is another make/brand that will fit the G body. I've already heard that the R4 compressor normally slings a little oil, but I'm looking to get away from that mess & find a better alternative. Anyone know of another compressor that will basically bolt up?

I don't know of any that are a direct bolt on replacement for the R4, but the brand new DELPI R4 compressor from AC delco has many upgrades the the aftermarket reman units dont have. I have done AC on cars for many years, and I have had little trouble with them . They are however expensive. I just Installed one on my El Camino Serp belt conversion, and had enough R12 stashed to run it . It makes super cold air. 8)

Has there been any oil slinging from the front seal ? Also, is there a place where I can find the delphi compressor by application (model/year) ?

I'm in the same boat. My AC leaked out over the winter and there is oil all over the shaft. I was leaning towards a rebuilt but if Delphi is better maybe I'll go that way. The Delphi OptiSpark I put in my Daughter's Firebird is working great so they must make good stuff.

No oil yet They use a double lip seal now, however some oil seep is necessary to lubricate the seal surface.
I got mine from http://www.rockauto.com. Mine was for a 92 Z28 it ran about $225 .With all the othe odds and ends I have about $300-$350 in my system.
If you replace your compressor it is a good idea to replace the accumulator and orifice tube also. I always flush the system and install the proper amount of PAG oil if you are using 134A .
525 mineral oil for R-12.
IF you are going the 134-A route I would get new double barrier hoses also and replace all other o-rings with compatible ones.

My hose assembly was replaced about 6-7 years ago with a OEM AC delco part. My original compressor was a harrison R4 (that came on the car when new) It was slinging oil before I did the retro-fit to R134A. during the retro-fit, I installed a new front seal, accumulator, & orfice tube. Within a couple of months, I started noticing oil slinging again & once again I replaced the seal a second time & it lasted thru the summer until the next spring when I started using the A/C again......and you guessed it. The last seal I put in was a Delco part# 15-30948 that is supposed to be a improved design from the previous seals available.

i switched to a sanden ,no oil slinging or leaks at all

this might be a little off topic but i just seen a 72 mercury comet today and the guy had his whole ac setup in his trunk he had a small electric motor that turned his compressor with belt i dont know how he rigged the whole system up but i thought it was intresting since it takes the strane off your motor since its not turning the ac compressor and i have the ac/heater delete in my malibu wagon i would consider that route of keeping my firewall clean and smooth and i am trying to find a good price on a mojave heater right now to solve my cold nights and foggy windows its a great invention for non heater cars when i run into that guy with the comet ill ask how he did that setup and see if i can get a pic and re post that

That sounds like an old york system for the rear of a limousine.
