I am converting my 80 Monte Carlo to 134a. I have a new compressor, drier, and orfice tube. I am having trouble getting the old orfice tube out. The line is crimped I see. Is there a trick to it? Beings the line is crimped do I have to replace the evaporater? I have all ready broke part of the end of the orfice tube off already. I figured I better ask for help before I f it up any more. Thanks!

Do you have any safety wire you can slip in to pull it out?

If you have to take off the top cover make sure you cut the seal with a razor first and then use a putty knife and small hammer.

The crimp is there to keep it from going in too far. I take it you broke the end off that you grab with needle nose. I have a good set of needle nose to get into these situations(there is a removal tool). Another thing you might try is air pressure otherwise just dig it out.

Thanks. I my wait until I bring some picks home. I had needle nose plyers, but they keep slipping off. I used a small screw driver when I broke the end. I was hoping the crimp did not hold it in. That was what I wanted to know. Thank you.

It might be a good idea to replace the evaporator anyway...especially converting to 134A from R12. I know, it could be flushed out, but why not go fresh...that's what I did. Less chances of problems down the road.
I also had a stuck orifice tube which remained in the old evaporator.

If you have to replace the evaporator anyway, consider taking the whole box off the firewall, treat any rust along the bottom, and put a fresh gasket on to prevent future leaks (it's 35 years old..). Gbody parts has them, fairly cheap. I found a surprising amount of junk in my housing, plus an outside scrubbing made it look new.
