86 cutlass supreme originally had olds 307 now has olds 350. Does anyone know where the brown ground wire goes to for the ac clutch relay. Ac clutch engages when it is grounded

Is their a way to hook it up different so it works without the ecm
Sure just ground it, that's all the ECM does.

You will however lose the "AC Cutout" functionality, that is to say the ECM won't turn off the compressor when you stomp the gas pedal past a certain point on the throttle. It would do this based of inputs from other sensors, namely the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) which was part of the original carburetor; assuming you no longer run that? If you think you really need that AC Cutout, you can probably rig up some kind of rpm activated switch, (ie; remove the ground above 3000-3500 rpm) or other means to disable the compressor as desired based off your throttle position.

I don't recall how they did that AC cutout in the diesel engines, but it may have been something similar to the old TH400 kickdown switches on the gas pedal linkage under the dash (at, or near WOT)? You'll have to do some research on options if you feel you need to have that functionality intact.

Is the ECM still running the engine? If you were to bypass the ECM what will increase the idle when it A/C is on? Why are you trying to run the A/C with out the ECM?

Making the A/C work would be fairly easy if you are not using the ECM but would need more info first.

Good point to have some type of idle kick in the mix as well if needed.

IIRC the HO engines (VIN 9) had fast idle solenoids on carb that kicked up as soon as you turned on the A/C from the control head and the pressure switch was closed, doesn't get controlled by ECM?

On the non HO (Vin Y) they used ILC Idle Load Compensators off engine vacuum that simply raised the idle based of the drop in vacuum when a load was applied. For example, turning the steering wheel during low speed, or parking turns and when the A/C clutch would kick on, alternator load, etc...

I was just going to say, simply ground the brown wire permanently. It'll act like a non-ECM car at that point and turn on the compressor when you select a mode where the compressor should come on.

As mentioned, the ECM will not kick it out on WOT, though as it will have no control over the relay at that point.

You can always rig up the manual WOT gas pedal cutout switch/bracket from an 85 VIN 9 and below. Just make an opening on the green wire from the HVAC head unit and jumper in the WOT gas pedal switch. Easy peasy.
