I have a 78 El camino I'm fixing to rip the AC box out of the engine bay, I've never really messed with ac and duct work stuff so was wondering if after I unbolt it from the firewall will I be able to slide it out far enough so I can take a sawzall to whatever is hooked up under the dash and just tuck it away and leave it hidden in there without having to pull the dash apart? I guess I should state that the reasons I'm doing this are 1: water is leaking in the pass side when it rains 2: with the big block in the car it's a real pain to work on anything on that side and 3: the interior is already all buttoned up so I don't really want to rip it all back apart just to do this. I pulled the compressor and lines years ago but I don't drive the car during the winter so have no use for the heater. Mostly just looking for that clean look in the bay and ease of access to work on that side of the motor. I've looked on some threads and every answer I come up with is pull the dash or beat it out with a hammer but I'd like to save it so I can attempt to modify the cowl panel at the top and reuse it to save some $

I took mine out without the dash coming out. I had the passenger fender off though, so it was much easier that way.

About how long did it take? I can't imagine it being too bad of a job but I don't have a clue what all is behind it after it unbolts from the firewall so I may be wrong haha

I still have heat and defrost in a compact package.
Heres a picture of how it looks under the hood with my big block;

It took about 2 hours. I found a video on YouTube that walked me through it. It was easy, I think it took me longer because I was preserving everything in case I wanted it to go back in later.

Thanks! The not having defrost isn't going to hurt my feelings much as it's never blew out the defrost vent anyway! Lol I haven't used the heater in it since at least 2013
