Was thinking of switching out my ssII15x7 rims or maybe get a better tire? I spin the tires pretty easy, would like to hook up instead of spinning. Not a drag car but always nice to surprise the newer "muscle" cars when they lose. Was thinking of getting 17x8s. Or maybe wider? And what kind of mods needed for a rim bigger than stock?

What size/brand tires are you running? Going to a 17x8 may or may not help depending on the tire used being stickier than what you have, the short sidewall doesn't help with hooking up the car.

A Larger contact patch and softer compound tires get better grip all around, a larger sidewall helps with traction when launching the car, a smaller sidewall helps with traction in the corners due to less tire flex. Knowing what you want to do with the car helps narrow your tire options to suit what you want from the car.

you can fit a 275-60 15 in the rear, but I would not recommend it on a 7" wide wheel. with 17x8's , you should be able to go with 255-55-17 or 255-50-17 out back ( provided wheel backspacing is correct.) Up front you could fit as much as 235-50 17's outside of that..... I couldn't say. I am conservatively stating that you could go about 28" tall and 10-11" wide in the rear, and say 235-245 wide front an not more than 26.5" tall

Meh, 275/60s on a 15x7 is pretty standard in my experience. Look great too.

Compound is the key, also if those tires are over 5 years old they are going to be hockey pucks when compared to new.

Look at the Toyo TQ Drag Radial - nice tread design (rain), decent compound, and they hook up okay too. Cost effective as well.

None of this is going to matter if your suspension is worn out or poorly set up.

Ya it's not a drag car by any means. But to be able to grip and go would be my goal. I guess I was assuming that a bigger rim will allow a fatter tire in the back to give it more traction. Wouldn't have to be 17s but seen a lot of cars with them and they fill the space pretty nice.

Car is estimated 400+ hp and around 475 torque. And the tires could be old.
