In car off season I work on restoration of WWII aircraft. At present is 1946 Lancaster Bomber and Mosquito Bomber. The Lancaster never saw action. The Mosquito is all wood aircraft powered by 2 Rolls Royce Merlin engine at1600hp each.We also fly a 1942 Stearman biplane an a Harvard(Texan).I have been putting in time on these planes since 2003.I do not pilot myself but loved planes as a kid.

My dad started his military career as aircraft-/hydraulics- and jet-engine technician when the post WWII German Luftwaffe was established in 1956. Even after his retirement from the Luftwaffe he had some great contacts that got on a lot of Huey and Transall flights as a kid.
Couple pics I shot at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford on this years travel to the UK. We managed to get there on a flight show day with a lot of WWI and WWII fighter planes and bombers in the air.

The Mosquito was a very versatile aircraft. As fast as many fighters of that era, but able to carry a good bomb load as well. They served in many different roles during the war. There was a variant that was modified to carry a 6lb rapid fire cannon for anti-submarine duty. The loading mechanism was designed by a guy who designed cigarette machines during peacetime.
The Lancaster was the king of heavy bombers during WW2. Near the end of the war, it was modified to carry a 10 ton bomb for certain targets. The bomb would gather speed during its fall, and bury itself deep in the ground upon impact before detonating. The resulting explosion would create a "mini" earthquake, which would cause the collapse of any structure nearby.

Wow, now that's a real deal hobby.
I have always been fascinated by planes and helicopters. Whenever I can and when I travel, I always go to different aviation museums. Last week while on a business trip, I stayed in Washington, D.C. an extra day just to go visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum again.

I really like aircraft. Been to the museum at Boeing field twice. It's got an incredible variety of planes. There is a museum outside Tillamook Oregon that is great as well. In a huge wooden hangar that is supposed to be the largest clearspan wooden building on earth. Used to house Navy blimps that patrolled the coast. They have a good chunk of the place set up showing engines including a Pratt and Whitney R 4360. Incredible engineering right there. Been to the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville Oregon where the Spruce Goose is kept. The size of that thing just boggles the mind. They have a bunch of random stuff sitting outside that you can get right up next to. F14s, MiGs, tanks, 747, etc. We have a small WWII museum here in Nampa called the Warhawk Air Museum. P40s seem to be their bird of choice. They restore and fly a bunch of the planes they have. We get to see these old birds flying over the house regularly. I enjoy stopping whatever it is that I'm doing to watch them cruise around.
