I got a 1978 Monte Carlo 2bbl 305.
Check engine light has been on & losing power when turning. Cannot seem to find the ALDL or ECM to retrieve code. In need of some guidance my friends

No Check Engine light or even computer in a '78 Monte Carlo. Only warning lights are as following for a 305 2bbl car:
Warning light only, Oil, Temp, Volt/Battery in the middle with the fuel gauge & Bright, Brake, Fasten Seatbelt on the side stack.
Gauge dash, only Bright, Brake, Fasten Seatbelt on the side stack.

78 G bodies would not have had computers yet. 1980 was the first year for computer control and only in Cali, 1981 for the rest of the US.

Could it be getting confused for the oil/choke light? Little oil can symbol maybe, or, at least it's what it looks like on an 83 gbody I've got here.

Or, could someone have swapped a later gauge cluster into it and have gotten a check engine symbol on the plastic printed slip in the housing, and thus, maybe illuminating something else?

Check it out, all original from what I know

Likely it is the oil pressure warning light. There is a Tan wire under the distributor plugged into the oil pressure sending unit. Take that wire off and ground it and see if that light comes on. If so it is oil pressure warning if not I have no idea what it is.

If it is oil and it comes on during turns the engine oil is low or there is some kind of problem in the oiling system.

I'm going to stand by my original guess of oil/choke light. Also, later clusters use the same layout, just renaming the pods:

Someone has altered the cluster. Notice the lack of pictogram on your "engine" light. Compare to this pic from the 1978 Monte Carlo sale brochure
