Are you sure the coil ground in the HEI is in place and in good condition. The lack of a coil ground causes the coil to overheat and stops producing high voltage, but usually works when cooled down. It's unfortunate that I know this.

it looked new to me the metal ground strap. i replaced the cap/rotor/coil/ground strap again and issue has not returned (so far)

hopefully that does the trick.
