I recently bought a pair of Moser street axles for my 81 El Camino. I've found an 85 SS Monte Carlo that I'd rather build. Will these axles work in the Monte? They do list them separately 78-81 and 82-88. I first thought it was because of the standard thread studs for lug nuts going to metric. The axles came in with no studs anyway. I don't care if it would be standard lug nuts on the rear but is there something else???

I believe they list them like that cause of '78-'81 "A" cars had inch studs & '82-'88 "G" cars were metric. The only thing would be the spline count. I think all 7.5 rears have a 26 spline, the 7.625 rears have 28 slines.

The studs (SAE or Metric) have different knurl sizes where they press in to the axle, hence the different part nos.

my 67 rear end had the SAE studs, I just opened the holes a few thou smaller than the diameter of the knuls so I could install the metric studs

What part number are the axles? It's the only way to know for sure. I put a set of those axles in the rear in my Monte, the rear is from a 80 Grand Prix, but I put the 7.6 ring gear and posi unit in it (28spline)

These ARP lug studs will fit the metric pattern on your 85 and are longer if you use spacers or other rim styles.
  • Press-in Type, 12mm x 1.5 Thread Size
  • 2.500 Inch Under Head Length; 0.315 Inch Knurl Length
ARP 1007708 Wheel Studs

I bought Moser axles a while back and they were also drilled for screw-in studs.

If you got the axles from Summit, and you need 28-splines, you could seek to exchange them. I still have my Moser box if you need it for a return.
