I'm thinking of putting a 402 in my 79 El Camino would it be the same as putting in a 454?

The 396, 402, 427, 454, 502, 572 BBC's all fit the same. Even tall deck 366 & 427 fit but who wants those truck engines.

Did not that. Always thought it was a regular deck block.

Yeah, not sure why they did that. Doesn't make it impossible to install, but does add extra pain in the butt to use one. I'm not sure how raised the exhaust ports are in those heads to add to the .400 taller deck. POSSIBLY if they are stock port heads it would be the same as using a raised port head on a short deck block.

You have to remember they are not only taller it also moves the heads outward which can create issues.
