New member here! Sorry if I am hijacking a thread, but I inherited a pair of 15x10 with 4.5 inch backspace. What is the chances that a 295/50-15 will fit? All stock rear end and suspension on 78 malibu wagon.

4.50" BS with push the tire out of the wheel well.

The Ideal offset in back on a G-body without a frame notch is around -.400" or -10mm

That would make the ideal BS for a 10" wheel 5" + .3" (to convert from offset to BS) -.4" or 4.9" - call it 5". With 5.5" BS you could add shim spacers to just keep the tire off the frame for max lip clearance.

4.5" BS would be giving up almost a 1/2" at the frame.

I've got 18x9.5" in the rear without a notched frame. These have a 5.5" backspace with a 10mm spacer to center them in the wheel well. The tires are 285/35/18. But the previous owner did trim the inside of the wheel openings for additional clearance. They do rub a little on the frame when cornering aggressively. So I will probably end up notching the frame this winter since I'm shooting for 18x10 wheels in the near future. Does any one have any pics of doing a frame notch? Specifically for an El Camino?

The problem when comparing larger rims to a 15" is they are totally different for sizing because the 15" will have a wider section width when comparing a similar height and tread width and that is typically where you have clearance issues.

Ok...I'm no stranger to G bodies, however, this will be my first attempt at a frame notch and large wheel fitment. I've gone over nearly every thread on how to notch and roll fenders but haven't really seen the answer I'm looking for specifically.

So......I want to go with a 15x10 wheel with a 295 50 15 tire on my 78 Malibu. I've already rolled the fenders and will be doing a notch in the frame. I plan on lowering the car where the fender juuuust tucks the rear tire. The million dollar question here is, how much frame notch do I have to do to achieve this? To the seam, past the seam, further?? I will also be moving the tubs in as well. The follow up question is, what backspacing would be best on said set up? Thanks in advance, and if anyone has pictures, please feel free to share.

Going to the seem (about an inch) in most cases is enough for a 295 on a 10" wheel to fit under the car. Proper wheel plays a part here. If you go further we recommend a thicker notch plate. We have 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4" ready go to at any time.

For my frame notch I went flush with the wheel tub any farther seemed pointless unless you are going to modify the tub also.

5" backspace will rub the tire against the frame on a wagon, in my experience
