Hi all,

I purchased a 1983 hurst olds a couple months ago. It is missing almost all vacuum lines and parts. I was able to get some of the parts by finding what they are from the chassis service manual. The manual doesn’t show anything about the egr solenoid tvs that is shown on the vacuum routing diagram. Currently the egr valve is plugged into this black box and nothing else is connected to it. The black box has 6 total vacuum ports on it. Does this box even belong on the car? Should this be where the egr solenoid should be or is the egr solenoid part of this black box, but what plugs into the other ports and which ports are the egr ports? I was really hoping that the chassis service manual had some more detailed vacuum hose routing, but it doesn’t. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Trying to get everything back to stock on this car.

So, after some more digging I found this is a triple solenoid assembly (EGR/RVB/ILC solenoid). And of course my carb is missing the ILC. Just strange that only the EGR solenoid is shown on the vacuum diagram. Still don't know which ports go to where though. I'm guessing the top is the EGR solenoid ports, but which goes to the EGR and vacuum source? I just ordered a 1983 Olds electrical troubleshooting manual, so maybe that will tell me something.

The emissions decal should show the proper routing.

Unfortunately it only shows EGR solenoid. Maybe they put this triple solenoid box on the '83 models and only used it for the EGR solenoid part. If I look at later models vacuum diagrams they show the triple solenoid on it instead of the EGR solenoid and the extra hose routing.

Yes since you have an 83 it shouldn't have came with the big black box stock. It had a different set up.

That’s what I was thinking also, but then saw this in the Haynes manual:

Your 83 shouldn't have the big black box. Instead it was just some smaller gizmo that controlled the EGR only.

The TVS in your air cleaner controls the RVB. 84 and up they did away with the TVS in the air cleaner and had the big black box control it instead.

The 3rd set of vacuum line connectors on the black box was for the ILC which is not used on a VIN 9 engine.

Thanks! Do you have any idea what the gizmo that controlled the egr looks like or a part number?

My air cleaner is not the stock dual snorkel, but I found one on eBay, but didn’t get here yet. Hope it has the tvs on it. It may not because the listing said it was from an ‘86 442.

There is no ILC on my carb, but the mounting screws were there so I thought someone took it off. Is there an ISC instead on the ‘83 vin 9 engines? Didn’t see a wire for it though. I have A/C btw.
