Hey fellas. I’m coming down to the wire in finishing up my Cutlass for paint. I’m going to be shooting it in solvent based Omni base made by PPG.

I’ve heard less than flattering things about the Omni clears as far as longevity is concerned, and the PPG 2021 clear that I’ve loved using in the past is no longer available to me due to local VOC regulations.

So I’m looking to hear from any and all you paint and body guys on the clear coats you all love so I can make a decision and purchase it. I’ve spent the last 3 years getting this thing ready to paint, and I’m not gonna slap just any old clear on it. But I’m not gonna break the bank for just clear either tho.
Something in the middle of the road would be preferable.

Pagrunt, Meloelky, 08Malibu, Blake442, Ribbedroof and Bonnewagon, DougChahoy, and others if I’ve missed ya, please weigh in if you can.

Thanks,

D.

From everything I’ve been reading for awhile now I’m considering Sikkens. Although it’s always been somewhat of a guide to use the same manufacture products start to finish to avoid potential problems. Hoping to get that far this summer ( finally ) . I’ll also be doing alot of research till then.

Have you contacted PPG to see what alternatives they have if the PPG 2021 is not available?

Yes I have, through my distributor. And they haven’t been terribly helpful. Most of their clears are for production purposes, which isn’t a concern here. I’d rather take the recommendations from actual car enthusiasts here (especially if there’s an overwhelmingly popular choice) than from a standard production perspective.

The first time my wagon was sprayed they used PPG products from start to finish. After they stripped it to bare metal AGAIN the final base/clear was all Glasurite products.

We've spoke about how 2021 is n/a,i liked dc 4000 as my back up.i like it over the others available in from, the concept line.steer clear of the 2042 btw,for something that expensive it's rather yellow.i wish i could recommend something from the global line as it's nice stuff but i don't have anything on hand to recommend.

Upol would be a good option in place of the Concept 2021. Should be able to get it up north as they follow European rules which is tighter that most of North America. Their 2882 (4:1) would be my recommondation. I had a lot of customers back in they day that would use Upol over any PPG they used. Even the few Diamont/R&M customers used Upol. There are other choices so here's a link to them. They don't have a Canada specific site so it's either a US or UK page (did pick "rest of the world" but linked to the UK).
