That looks like the ignition on power wire.
Meter it out the the fuse box under the driver dash.

Get a Haynes manual for about $20.
The book will have all the wiring diagrams in the back.

If I were you I'd be looking for engine and headlight harnesses that are in good shape to replace what you are trying to figure out.

Of all underhood wire some numb nuts hack why is it the main power wires & then the starter wire. Can't explain why they hacked them that far up unless the raped it of the old engine. Either a good useful complete harness or good quality wire of the correct gauge & color with good insulated splices-non of the parts stores yellow/blue/red ones.

It's not that bad; hacked, yes- end of the world, no.
Those are the main power feeds to the ignition switch and the alternator charge line.
I'm more scared of what's under the tape on the purple start wire.

If it makes you feel any better, that's not terrible. Mine was smoking and shorting everywhere! Partly from the rat damage, partly from the prior owner using screw nuts, just twisting wire together and taping, and best of all (my personal favorite, bunching 4 gauge up and clamping with a terminal clamp to extend the wire!

But if this can be saved, so can yours! If you need me to draw any diagrams or stuff, electrical is my area of expertise (studying to be an electrical engineer) :)

I've seen worse. Just get a diagram and replace with proper wiring. See that black cylinder? That's a fusible link and is several gauges smaller than the wire it is in. It is designed to fail in case of a short like a one time fuse. It goes to the battery connection down at the starter. Test that it is not blown and then use that for your hot-at-all-times power source. Look here. http://www.maliburacing.com/wiring.html
