86 MCSS, 90K miles G80 rear end.
I'm getting a clunk in the rear when going around corners and hitting a bump. The axle has just under 3/32" in/out motion which sounds exactly like the clunk. I inspected the C clips, axle ends and the center pin and they all show a little wear. Are there oversize C clip available? Even if they're a little too thick I can machine them thinner.

Take the cover off and inspect the pinion gears. I had that symptom and it turned to be teeth intersecting badly. Then one day I had a spool....

Ed,
While you have it apart carefully pull the spring block plates. While this is a picture from the 79 manual of a Borg-Warner style unit Auburn's are the same design. I had the spring block plates fracture and fail in a Malibu Classic I had owned. Same symptoms....Clunking around turns until the plates failed and were spit out the rear cover.

A rear end clunk is not going to rectified by a c- clip.

How does the oil look, and any scary debris on the magnet or in the case? If oil is smoked or debris found, then pull the diff and ring gear. Have you checked for a loose link connection in the 4 link or shock?

A spool isn't for the street.
Been there with my No Slip in my 7.5". It became a no slip at all. Parrell parking was violent.

The 'spool' wasn't on purpose. Enough bits got into the wrong places that there was no differential. Chirped the tires around the corners. When I took off the diff cover, a bunch of trash fell out and the gear oil looked like a metal flake paint job. G80 no longer. My younger, dumber days.

I know I'm doing it all wrong but I inserted a shim at the C clip - now its quiet( yes, there is still very little play in axle in out movement.) Just need to figure out a permanent solution.

the stock C-clip is .150"....Jeep C-clips are .175" and they just need a little grinding on the inside diameter to fit...
