As I'm sitting here in the garage waiting for the Pig to heat up so I can test the fuel pump, I'm listening to the AC compressor chatter its arse off. It's a non-functioning compressor off an 02 Firebird and a serpentine, so I don't want to lose the belt. Will this thing launch on me? It sounds like hell and I'd rather not make idler pulley brackets as I can't afford to mess with the AC right now.....

If it's non functioning (as in the clutch doesn't ever kick on) it sounds like the bearings are going. At some point (if that's what it is) it may lock up and kill the belt. I think you're going to have no choice soon. You could get a junker with good bearings since you just need the pully to spin and don't need the A/C.

Yes it can come apart.

The real question is ...can it go back together!!!!

Usually can't go back together after it locks up, dents the hood, breaks the belt, wife is with you and you are late to the in-laws

Maybe just buy the new compressor sooner than later and mount it in it's place.
