Can I bolt a non-EGR intake to an EGR engine and be ok?

My car is a bone stock 87 regal with the 3.8 N/A engine. I saw edelbrock has a 4-bbl intake for it, but it is a non-EGR intake. My car currently has an EGR valve, so could I bolt the Edelbrock intake to my car and be ok?

You will be fine without the EGR valve. Cheaper route than the Edelbrock would be to use an intake from a Buick 4.1L keeps the EGR and uses a Qjet.

Only issue I would see would be with computer controls. If EGR is electric and tied into computer, you'll get a check engine light. Forgive my stupidity if the 87s were'nt all computered up. I've got older stuff and newer stuff so I'm not sure when computer took over EGR functioning.

The timing will have to be backed off or you'll have pre-detonation. The recycled exhaust cools down the ignition chamber so with a hotter ignition chamber the timing has to be reduced or the engine will be pinging. The EGR port in the head also needs to be plugged or the exhaust gasses will heat up the intake

I did it on an 86 3.8 without having to back off the timing. I do see where you are coming from with blocking off the EGR port though with the Edelbrock intake.

Don't waste your time or money, just save up for a better engine. No matter what you do, a n/a 3.8 is stuck at 120 HP. It sucks but that is how GM made them. 😢

I don't understand your beef with GM. That 120 hp engine is still running after all these years and it's apparent all the previous owners were satisfied with it since it was left as stock. What's the problem if he wants to get a bit more power out of it?

I'm glad someone finally said it. I totally agree. I don't see anything wrong with people like Joe trying to get moreoput of what they have without having to do swap......if Clone hates GM so much maybe he should switch car manufacture, only to find out they ALL have flaws. Whether is motor mounta, under powered 3.8l, etc.

I don't hate GM, and I am not saying the 3.8 is a bad motor, but they did cut cornners to improve their bottom line like every other manufacturer. It just wasn't designed to be a high performer and the money can be better spent on putting in a motor that is designed for performance. I had a 3.8, I installed a 4bbl manifold and Qjet, gainned 10 HP. If you really want to improve a 3.8 n/a, then rebuild it with a higher compression ratio, cause that is the main thing holding it back the low 8.5 CR. Even then don't expect to break 200 HP. In stock form with a 2bbl they make 110 HP, add a 4bbl they go up to 120 HP and are stuck there. Add headers and free flowing exhaust, still 120 HP, eddy carb and intake, still 120 HP, hot ign, still 120 HP, etc. With higher CR and ported out heads you might reach 180 HP, but that is alot of money and work for little improvement. Except for the turbo versions, the 3.8 lacks a good size aftermarket support for a reason, because it's just not a performance motor. Even the turbo versions suffer problems like blowing head gaskets since the 3.8 wasn't designed for high HP, GM just didn't intend the 3.8 to be used that way when it first designed it. This isn't a jab at GM, they need to sell low and mid power motors besides fancy high power motors. Why you took it as a insult torwards GM is beyond me.

Yes I understand all cars have flaws, the problem is you two just want to bury your heads in the sand and ignore them instead of talking about how to fix them. Pontiacgp and Hurst1979, I don't understand why you keep coming up with all these fallacious and bizarre arguments or why you hold a undue grudge torwards me? All your arguments have not proven me incorrect since they have been mostly strawmen and ad hominems, tactics of a weak argument which you two have shown again here. I didn't come to these forums to pick fights, but it seems you two are itching for one which is a shame. Way too many car forums are filled with hot heads looking for a fight or any excuse to.

but all he asked about was installing a non egr intake....he wasn't complaining about the engine
