Can someone tell me what this line is for?

It's been awhile since I've posted but still been lurking occasionally. I finally got some ambition to work on the car and was kind of stumped by this. The engine is a 72 olds 350 and the heat and AC are bypassed. The line I'm questioning runs from the back of the intake to the small fitting on the water pump. I always thought the small fitting on the water pump went to the heater core so it would always be flowing coolant for the heater (not going through the thermostat)? I'm wondering if I need this line still or If I could plug the back of the intake and cap the small fitting on the water pump?

coolant bypass hose

I would think a cap with a clamp would leak eventually

Someone made a bypass for your heater core. The pressurized water flows out of the back port of the intake and would normally supply the heater core to the smaller 5/8" hose line. And the fitting would be normally on the passenger side, but really it doesn't matter. Out of the core, the 3/4" line would travel across to the 11 o'clock port and flow into the suction of the water pump. The radiator hose in, and the two top fittings of the water pump are suction lines. The discharges of the water pump is on either side of the block.

You could put a rubber cap and clamp it on the suction port of the pump. If you want to cap off the back of the intake, remove the hose fitting and put a plug in it like someone apparently did on the passenger side rear.

Hope that helps.
