Casting Numbers

what information do the casting numbers on the ridge above the bellhousing provide? could they tell me what year my engine was made? what about if its a 350 or a 305? i know it sounds stupid but the guy i bought it off of was undecided about the size.

The number on the back should tell you if its a 305 or 350 and it should give you a ballpark on the years. To be sure on the year you need the number that is on the front passenger side of the block, right in front of the head, behind the alternator.
