hey guys new to the forums first post! so i have a 83 el camino with a gm 350 in it with a th350 transmission. i use to drive the car as my daily driver but ran into some problems. the car has sat for about a year but im ready to put some money and time into it. i got it running i recently replaced the fuel pump and got it started, the carb needed a rebuild but i bought a basically brand new edelbrock 750cfm carb for 60 bucks!. ive replaced the plugs also but the car is running rough. i remove the egr and most of the smog equipment, i want my engine bay looking as clean and basic as possible. how do i go about this? i feel like my timing is off but i dont know where to even start. any suggestions on how to get this bad boy up and running better?

A aftermarket generic part is not going to work as well as a carefully designed factory part. Without the factory computer controlled carb, the ECM will go into limp mode and not advance your ignition timing.

I think the best idea would be find someone who can tune a carb and has a timing light. You can try adjusting the air mixture screws a little bit and see if it gets better. You also can turn the distributor one way or the other and see if it runs better. The first thing I would do is check the spark plug wires and make sure they are on the right order. Check for vacuum leaks also.

Have you used a 1979 or older HEI ? On mine 1981 El Camino SS I have a 290 HP 350 in it. I used a 1979 HEI with an high output coil. ,With an Eldelbrock 600 cfm carb and Performer A set of Chevrolet cast aluminum valve covers. thermostat housing from my 1973 Nova SS. Moroso spark plug wire looms. I have owned but Chevys most of my life .So I have a number of spare parts from them. And the El Camino passed emissions with this combination Just remember its your El Camino . So do with it as you wish ..
