Refer to video... Starter or flywheel issue ?

Starter is new and almost newly installed myself...

Flywheel squeaks a little upon warm up, until I tap the gas.

Are the bolts to the starter tight? Looks like the starter moves around too much.

If it is lose it pivots at an angle and binds up trying to back out of engagement. The most movement seems to be when the gear is trying to disengage.

That's what I noticed too, the same time the clunking sound happens, the starter jumps outward and away from the flywheel...

I'll check the starter to see if it's tight or shakes by hand.

Starter shouldn't move at all...

I literally just started it and ran for a few moments before I shut it of with no issues, except with what I expected with fuel and air mixture as I'm in the middle of tuning my carb and setting the timing correctly...

Starter isn't loose, it didn't budge when I tried to shake it around...

Just ordered this pick and hook set to pull out the pinion gear out and check the gap between it and the flywheel teeth...

I put on every shim the starter came with...

But never extended the pinion gear to check the gap...

The torque converter wouldn't cause that sound would it ?

And I bent or warped flywheel would be easily visible right ?

Seen this post in this forum...is this true ?

If the flywheel and block isn't modified, I shouldn't have to use shims ?

I would try a shim and also see if it has this brace. All GM 2 bolt starters came with some kind of brace like this.

Various GM starter braces from the junkpile.
