Hi Guys,

So I am in dire need of rebuilding the column in the 78 Caballero, it is total junk.. Need to clean inspect and replace parts as needed.

Question is can I swap in the column from my 83 Regal into it so it won't be out of commission while I repair the 78 column? Will I have any issues with the harness connectors not matching up?

Thanks!

U can use the 83 if you have the intermediate shaft from the 83 as well

78's use a 1 year style column.

Also the 83 should has the wipers on the blinker arm.

Thanks! I won't be using it much really. I don't need the wipers to work right now. So the harness will match up? I also have a jeep steering shaft for the Regal column. That should work right?

I am not 100% on the harness connectors but I would say the main harness for the ignition should work.

With the jeep shaft you have to notch the column shaft as I am sure you know.

That '83 column will plug into your harness, just zip tie the wiper harness to the column to keep it out of the way. I used a '86 floor shift column when I first did the 4 speed swap, just plug & play, pulled the wiper/turn lever & put in my original turn lever. Just wish I never cut the linkage end off the column.

Yup. The regal column is notch for it already. Planning on working on the Regal mostly this winter.. It's a frame off so it's in stands not going anywhere soon.. I need the elco as a parts runner for now that's I just want to swap the column quickly to keep it in the road while I repair column.. It's pretty jacked up.
