I was always under the understanding that it came out from the shaft when the pump started going out. Any ideas?

I know on a Chevy it comes out of the weep hole underneath when the pump or seal is bad.

On the other hand coolant could come out from around the shaft if you ignore warning signs like your water pump bearings squealing for their life.
