I went searching on Jeg's for something else, and this popped up:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet-Performance/809/12530283/10002/-1

This is the engine I have recommended several times. Right now it's $170 off list price. All new with Vortec heads. The only thing wrong with it is that it is not drilled for a mechanical fuel pump. The stock cam is rated at 250 HP, but it's a roller block, so you can reuse all the lifters and hardware with just a simple cam change with up to 0.465 lift. Includes tin and a balancer. I'd buy one, but I have the 2-bolt version sitting in my garage that I bought years ago and have not gotten around to installing and that's an expensive way to get two more bolts on each main cap...

Pfft - you can fit a .488" cam in there just fine. ;)

Swap the springs to LS6 and some $53 Comp Cams retainers and you're good for .500 lift easy with no machining

I ate a pair of heads once. The pushrod guides ovaled out and the machine shop guy never mentioned too much lift, but happily took my money to machine the heads for screw-in rocker posts and guides. But proven advice is why we are here.

I hope this thread would inspire someone who wants to upgrade. Free shipping of a 450 pound engine is also a good deal. I looked at shipping a short block halfway across the country and ran into freight charges of $275.

My dad put one of these straight from the crate into a '36 Ford. Even with the stock cam it was a runner. This is a good buy.

And the Ford was so pissed off having a Chevy between the fenders that it left skid marks, both ways, uphill?
