I would also guess it's the steel wheels flexing. The Lincoln Town Car I used to have had a creaking noise that I couldn't track down, I thought it was ball joints or a-arm bushings, so I replaced all the front end bushings and it was still there. I forget how I figured it out but it turned out the noise was from the aluminum center caps on the wheels. I just rolled without the centers after that, but a dab of grease probably would've worked.

It rained all day today- it was quieter. Still ticked a bit. Water lubricates so I'm thinking grease on the tabs is worth a shot. More rain tomorrow so after that I can test.

It doesn't sound like this is your problem, but the first set of BFG Radial T/A's on Dad's 62 Ford Galxie got old and creaked and ticked. We'd never experienced something like that before. We thought the Centerlines were coming apart. I guess the car had sat around so long that the sidewalls were structurally failing.

No, they are Tiger Paws and only a couple of years old. At least it is only an annoying creak. I used to have a 1976 LeMans that the hub caps would fly off every now and then. Not fun retrieving on the interstate. UPDATE: rain stopped, Sun came out, had to go out, no noise. WTF?

So it started again. This time I swapped two caps from front to rear and added a schmear of grease to the rim. Much better yet I still hear the rear trying to make noise on braking. I wonder if it is the rim flexing and causing whatever cap is on it to sound off?

The rims do flex, the older rims that they used with bias ply tires had a problem flexing alot if radial tires were used on those rims but the rims that came with radial tires were stronger and did not flex as much.
