So after almost 9 years of having a Hurst Olds hood scoop and mouldings on my 87 442, I finally got sick of the hood ornament molding not matching the flat hood mouldings. I finally had an idea of how to possibly make it match. For reference before I had just removed the hood ornament and painted it black. It never looked right. Here's what it looked like before.

So it was off to the wire wheel/ grinder for some reshaping and cleaning.

After I was happy with that it was time to mix up some JB weld to fill it all in and smooth it out.

After allowing it to cure it was time for sanding and shaping.

And finally some paint to cover it all up

The end result is a piece that while not perfect does look like a factory piece that matches the H/O hood mouldings.

Another fine example of "do it as if factory would have used good stuff" but in this case "done it right"

Thanks! I can't believe it took me so long to come up with a solution to such a simple problem. But the end result is way better than what I had to begin with. Anyway here it is installed. Yes I know the car is no show piece and it needs paint but this looks much better than it did.

Looks good. But it didn't take too long to come up with it. It just took 3 years of looking at it to take the 15 minutes to come up with it.

Actually it was 9 years of looking at it not 3.

I like the idea you had to just eliminate that springy ornament (which I never liked on GM cars, especially the Cadillac ones that used to get stolen like crazy in the 80's) and smooth it down flat.

When I repainted my 87 Salon back around 1993, I just had the body shop mix up some epoxy/fiberglass and remove that channel from the header panel and make it smooth. The Hood center molding just ends at the edge of the hood instead of continuing into the header panel. I was tempted to do the same for the rocket emblem between the grilles back then too, but glad I didn't since that and the rear trunk lock cylinder cover are the only remaining Oldsmobile insignia on the car except the interior dash, and door panels. Gotta give the younger generation guys a little clue what it is... LOL :ROFLMAO:
