I have a cutlass with what I think is a 307 motor and was thinking about trying to get a 350 put in instead. But my question is would any 350 motor be interchangeable with the 307 or do i have to get a specific 350 motor? i dont kno much about cars so this is all brand new to me

If it's an Olds 307, an Olds 350, 403, or 455 will drop right in.

If you want to put in a Chevy 350, you'll have to change the motor mounts, some wiring, get all new accessory brackets, and possibly change your transmission.

I'm in the same boat as you are. I don't really want to put a chev engine in. Not that there's anything wrong with that but the fact that so many other parts must be changed. I want a new engine not one rebuilt after 380,000 miles. :(
You know what i think? I think if someone from G.M. were to build us 307 inherited poor bastards an engine to replace the one they should have thrown in the garbage when drawing it out,G.M. would make so much money that the Olds could be reserected!!!!!
my 2 cents towards the bloody thing. there...I feel better already.

The Olds 307 was not a powerhouse nor is it a cost effective power to dollar rebuildable engine for the power seeker. That said its reliable when used and maintained sensably as is proven by the 380,000 miles and as it has been for many other owners. Seems hard to b*tch about it to me. There are several good Olds rebuilders around the country that specialise in rebuilding these engines. You will probably pay about 15% more to have it built plus shipped to you than a comprably rebuilt sbc but you can usually get an Olds 350 or 403 that is literally a "drop in" as in bolt up to your existing transmission, accessories, fuel lines, battery, starter etc ie it will save you on grief & misc parts and or shop labor. Engines built by proffessional craftsman also tend to make better power, get better mileage, and last longer, and as such are usually a good value for your money spent. Maybe someone can post a list of Olds builders for you.

Boy I wasn't too happy,was I?
Days have passed and I'm now blessing my little squirrel for getting as far as it has. If you are going to re-motor take all the advice you can from this forum, pick what is in your budget,+ 50%,lol and go for it because these are guys that know what they are talking about. :)
I for one have a much better grasp on what my intentions are for my cutty next spring thanks to reading this forum.

old post I know, but I've had 5 307s and a 260 ....underpowerred - without a doubt, but they did exactly what they were designed to do and did it very well. The small Oldsmobiles were to be lazy (low RPM) torquey engines .... designed to move BIG cars with a small displacement engine. They were also built for longevity .... want power? Get more cubes. What a 307 can't do a 330/350/BBO can do!

The 350 should bolt in using only 3 bolts per side. The mounts on the block would need to be changed to fit the clam shell. If you have not got a 350 yet, It looks by the Falcon avater that you are in atlanta or atleast Ga. (because nobody else got love for the dirty birds) Check craigslist, between whole cars and just motors you should be able to find a Checy 350 or olds the olds are better just check the atlanta craigslist. They go for cheap used or rebuilt.
