I am planning on eventually making my own carpeted trunk kit for my Regal since the prices for these are pretty high for what they are and I am wondering for those who have done this what is a suitable hardboard to use as a backing for the carpet since I would like replicate what the kits use and have never seen one in person.

I think I still have the factory cardboard pieces from my cutlass

I want to make something like this since the Regal won't have a fuel cell or roll bars etc I would like to give it a finished look.

I thimk the aftermarket kits are cardboard. It seems like I've read complaints against the cardboard. The stereo/speaker guys all use MDF but lord that stuff is heavy. Maybe thin plywood, like 1/4"?

I was thinking maybe some sort of paneling maybe even 1/8", something that I can just buy a 4 x 8 sheet of and cut from there.

I was also thinking of using a plastic sheet something similar to Lexan figuring it would be more durable and won't be affected by moisture etc.

That gives the trunk a really nice clean look. Maybe you can make a build thread about this project so that others can do the same. I'd sure like to do this in my Grand Prix.

I want to do the same thing in my Lemans and was going to try to use corrugated plastic signs as backing. Should be firm and light.

I went to Lowe's for something else but looked at what they had as far as sheets made from wood, plastic and hardboards and this seemed like it would work best for what I want to do, it is firm but has some give and should cut easily and at the price of $7.98 for a 4 x 8 sheet I can screw up a couple times and still finish it without a lot of money spent.
