Dash trim?

I think what I'll end up doing is buy some nice woodgrain veneer sheets and cutting them out to fit the stock panels. Then I'll coat them with a poly varnish for a highly polished finish. Kinda like the high-end wood in the newer cars. Just an idea for now...

Blake...I tend to like the *ugly woodgrain* on my 86 better than the *pretty woodgrain* on my old 84 :>P lol

I tried the wood veneer thing. Did okay but its tough to stain the veneer without it being on the part. Otherwize it starts to crinkle up on you when you get it wet with stain.

The biggest issue I've found though with the interior pieces isn't the wood grain necessarily looking bad but all of the chrome accents either fading or wearing off. That's what really detracts from the interior. And I have yet to see a paint that can be used that would even come close to the original vacuum metallized stuff that was used.

It would be nice to find a place that would can redo the woodgrain and everything on these peices. However it would probably end up costing more for that service than to just find an NOS piece.

Well, I still might try it but I'm not goingto hold my breath on it. I'm not even going to attempt it unil I'm dealing with the final aspects of the interior. After I get the upholstery re-done and installed, etc. From the current rate of progress, it's gonna be awhile...

It might work if you glue, as in solvent base contact cement up the wood veneer on the factory alum insert. Then finish it with a spray can clear then glue it to the plastic trim.

try this stuff.....................bought some and redid all my dash parts. for the silver stripe, i used a profesional pinstripe.............2 mm silver. matched up real nice. i will post pics later.

this was the closest match to a 442 woodgrain

posted pics of my r-vinyl re wrap on the dash parts in my profile. thought it turned out very nice, and i got real high standards. used a 2 mm light pearl silver pinstripe. not a super glossy finish to it, but i think you could clearcoat or someting to sheen it up. I'm gonna leave it the way it is, the product actually has some texture to it, almost like real wood

critisism welcomed

You did a really nice job! I want to try that pin stripe stuff. Where do you buy such a thing?

No critisism here...that looks nice! The silver pinstripe really sets it off.

How did you do the pinstripe? What did you use to get such a fine and precise stripe? C'mon...spill the beans.. 😀

Does anyone know who makes that aluminum dash/door trim that is meant to replace the woodgrain? It is aftermarket, but I can't for the life of me find it!
