I'm exposed to new cars every day at work. So far, unimpressed, especially given the dollars to fun ratio on them

After repairing cars for a living for many years my El C is the only one I will work on, it makes me happy to drive. All I need

Statistics are not on the side of that argument. There are WAY more newer cars than ones of our era. Sheer numbers make it such that most of the cars on a rollback are newer. Plus, a lot of old stuff are hobby cars. Not driven as much and are also taken care of...

With all that said, I'll always keep an old school vehicle around. Never know when the Rush song Red Barchetta is gonna come true (like the New Yorker article above).

"By taking people out of the driver’s seat, they aim to make travelling by automobile as safe as flying in a plane. " Until one falls from the sky- as they seem to do on a regular basis. Let's face it. Most people are mechanical morons. They don't WANT to know how to fix or even drive a car. They just want to get where they are going without taking their noses out of their phones. We are a small minority that values the car for what it is- a machine- that we can operate and repair by ourselves. And we enjoy doing that. The unwashed masses don't, and they don't care if cars go the way of most things- idiot proof and disposable. But when a huge Sunspot causes an RFI that fries all the electronics- then we old school mechanics will be in the cat bird seat.

The thing that no one accounts for is what happens in a mechanical failure? What happens in a electronic/computer failure? (See Boeing 737 Max) Why the rush? Airbags were such a big deal to make mandatory but it took from the '70's to the '90's to get it done. With all the computor controls, Wi-Fi connections, over air updates what won't stop the schemers from hi-jacking your ride by either keeping you from using it or taking you to a bad location? (See FCA about how cars were "controlled enviroment" hi-jacked & controlled by someone with a laptop a few years back.) I can understand safety features but what they added is making "drivers" lazy & letting the car correct the issue cause the f*ck*ng cell phone is more important than driving. Go after that issue before cause I still see too many phones being finger f*ck*d when the person should be watching the road. Now make controlless cars that needs technology that can be wrong or fail at any given time to run around that can't be mechanicaly control is far from being safer. Maybe an Amish buggy would be a better ride in the future (until they say the horse farts are bad for the enviroment.)

As I follow several threads, I have to ask, 'why do we do this to ourselves?' Fixing 40-year-old cars that GM never intended to have on the road more than 10.

Also....because we can
