different rally gauge clusters

I read on a facebook page that the rally cluster for the 78-80 are different than the clusters for 81-88 in how they bolt up and wire in. I had never run into that before and wanted to find out how accurate that was. since if its on facebook it has to be true lol.
Different cluster for diesel, shift indicator, etc but are there other variations out there

The only difference would be us/metric measurements, needle/graphics colors, "Diesel Only" fuel gauge, cover plate for OD shift pattern. GM was really cheap on what they did with our cars so outside of cosmetic changes they all should interchange with some '80's, all US '81 up having a CEL light. Get the right cluster you might even get what is needed to add a "Low Fuel" light.

If vss isn't needed would it physically bolt in and work like a newer cluster. This is just for my knowledge since I already have a cluster
