Does anyone have any experience with the cheaper HEI and MSD copycat distributors on Ebay.Putting together a SBO with my 19 year old this spring and getting some parts together for it. He doesn't have a huge budget but we would like to get something new.Thanks.

I know the HEI's had a lot of issues. From what I hear lately, they are a lot better. Just buy one with a good warranty from a good seller.

I would use the stock one before one of those ebay jobs.
If you want to save money the last thing you need is one of those to wipe the cam gear.

Just rebuild your stocker. I'd cost about the same if not a bit less. Curve kit, new module, cap, rotor, coil (if yours is bad), carbon button, and the little felt/rubber washer and you're good to go. Of course you could always go further with adjustable vacuum advance, new gear (just use a finish nail to knock out the roll pin, install new gear and tap pin back in GENTLY) if your gear is bad. But of course if you don't have a Dizzy, just either buy a used one off ebay or go junkyard hunting. Anything off SB or BB olds should work. Don't use one off a computer controlled vehicle. It won't work.

DUI's are not cheap
Agreed. I wasn't very clear with my response. I posted the link for the D.U.I. as that is what I would go with if it were me. When I said 'cheapies' I was referring to the very entry level distributors, which I wouldn't buy. If the O.P. does go with a D.U.I., get it directly from them and they will customize the curve for your specific setup.

I would try and find one with an adjustable mechanical and vacuum advance. I would bet most would come out of the box with points or Chevy timing curves. You want at least 20 initial at idle and a fairly fast curve.
