There's a wire that's plugged into the steering box of my '86 Monte. Have always wondered what it's there for. Haven't thought about it in a very long time until recently when I started in on the front suspension/steering. I referenced the factory shop manual I have but found nothing.

This is quite perhaps a stupid question but... What the hell is that for??

If I remember correctly, that goes to the computer to tell it when the steering is at full lock. When it gets that signal, it will bump the idle up to keep the car from stalling out.

That actually makes a hell of a lot of sense

Ah what engineers had to worry about when cars only had 130 hp. Those were the days.

Some cars had a steering box sensor that shut off the AC compressor under heavy steering load.
