I don't own a gBody (please don't kill me). I bought a 1972 nova with a straight 6. I pulled the plugs and went to install the new plugs and they don't fit plus my distro doesn't match other 1926 inline 6 engines.
My distro also says 1979 Malibu.
Can anyone identify this motor? The casting number comes up as a 230/250 but looking at other car pictures this motor didn't come out of a 1972 nova but i seen pictures of Malibu straight 6es and it matches those.

The numbers that will really help you are stamped on the narrow 'shelf' of the distributor pad.

Running off to the side from where the dizzy goes in the machined surface tapers to be close to the block. There TWO sets of numbers there.

Did someone force that HEI distro on it?
Also, i just popped in a fresh battery to see if it will turn over and it makes a weird noise and nothing moves. Is this the start solenoid trying to engage, or is the motor frozen?

The HEI is from a 250 six 1975 and up. Drops right in no forcing required get the number from it to see what it came from. My guess is an early '80s pickup.

That noise is the starter turning free, the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel/flexplate.

Where would the number be? In this picture you can't see the whole number but is this the number i want? I can go take a better picture if it is.
So your saying there is still hope that it might turn over if i get the starter issue resolved.

Doesn't the number by the dipstick indicate a 1974?

Put a breaker bar with socket on the end of the crankshaft and gently try to rotate it. That's gonna tell you if it's frozen or free without dealing with the starter.

If it's stuck then you can worry about choosing which product you have on hand to pour into the cylinder and wait to free it up hopefully

The number on the distributor is stamped into the side of the aluminum case.

The date code is November 17 in a year ending in 4. Does not have to be 1974.

November would be the next model year so it is a 65.

The stamped number by the distributor identifies the engine, the TA is from a pickup. The fact this is a two letter code says it is a pre 1970 engine a 1974 would have a 3 letter code.
