I'm just wondering what would cause a transmission to behave differently when timing is adjusted, pertaining to a 1981+ CCC equipped stock vehicle.

Factory transmissions aren't electronically controlled, but with timing changes or less than ideal running condition I have noticed the transmission shift points change and firmness in the shifts.

What would be the relation be between the two?

Timing affects vacuum. Advance usually increases vacuum to a point. Is your trans vacuum controlled?

As said above vacuum

or you may have knocked off the vacuum line to the trans and didn't realize it.

Transmission is a 2004R.

I was experimenting with timing, and after each setting, the transmission acting differently each time.

Well then it's not vacuum to the trans.

Are you sure it's not just the engine reacting to the different timing settings.

Unless you are messing with the TV Cable you should not different sh*t patterns.

Nope, clear and distinctly different transmission function. Holding gears longer, and when it does shift, it's hard and clunky.

All within an hour's time and test driving in between settings, transmission felt different after each adjustment.

The engine is obviously a factor, but when the sweet spot was finally found, the transmission shifted and I could barely feel it.
