Is it just me or is Facebook creepy as f#cking hell?

I'll preface this by saying I don't have any social media (unless you want to count forums) and I can't stand the idea of it. I think for the majority of people it's all totally in vain and for the companies running it, it's just masking their data collection.

Anyways regardless of what I think, I reluctantly created a FB account because I'm tired of not having access to marketplace. And I only wanted it for marketplace. So I used a burner email, didn't use my full name, gave FB zero permissions, didn't upload any photos or send any friend requests, didn't give it a phone number or any other information other than the bare minimum. It takes a week or so before they approve you to use marketplace, so the week finally goes by, and I start browsing marketplace. On that, I don't know if it's better than craigslist, but it's certainly more active.

Anyways, I go to check out any new listings this evening, and son of a b*tch, I get into the app and all of these friend suggestions pop up of people I know. How the **** did it figure it out? Like my coworkers, people I went to high school with, ex girlfriends, neighbors. What the f#ckkity f#ck is going on?

So yeah, I'm out. Deleting my account. Way too creepy for me. I'll use my Dad's Facebook account if I want to use marketplace.

I'd like your posts but don't want GBF to sell my preferences.

So much data is collected that you probably aren’t aware of, regardless if you are on FB or any social media site. There are places that research/mine/analyze data collected from wifi or other networks too I believe if they have or can access it, “market research”. On one hand it’s creepy, the other “ehh, whatev” if it isn’t anyone literally getting into my accounts or banking/social security or literally hacking my stuff. Just always know someone can see what you browse(and likely more) if not on your own secure network.

Good points. It immediately made me think if this is just the stuff I'm seeing, imagine how much data is collected that I don't know about. I personally find it pretty creepy, but in this day and age, it's practically unavoidable without being a hermit. I don't know that there is a way to have your cake and eat it too.

My guess is it tracked your IP address and compared it to everyone around you, those peoples, friends, their friends (real life and FB), and so on. It sounds like the beginning to a cyber apocolypse story, but that's just how things are. everyone is up everyone's *ss and the corporations are stealing everyone's data, exploiting one legal loophole after another as the laws catch up to the information age.

I rarely go to FB anymore. I make about 1 or 2 posts per year. I do keep tabs with a couple of people as far as what they've been up to. You know, the ones that take a selfie when they're eating a bowl of Cheerios sitting on the toilet? Yeah, those types. Sad actually. First world problems.

At any rate, they data mine, everyone data mines. Because YOU are the product. Advertisers pay for those "lists". But I look at it like credit cards. There are some consumers that pay interest on those cards. And those that don't. I have purchased over $28,000 worth of stuff last year on credit cards according to my year end statements. I put everything I buy on the reward cards. Total late fees and interest I paid? ZERO. Whatever it is, I pay it off every month. I get all the rewards and cash back without the pain of paying the credit card company to make up for the other people like me.

FB is the same way. They can sell my info to whomever they want, but they get nothing from me for it. At least knowingly. I spend about 10 minutes per month looking at other people's posts on FB, and I don't click on any advertisements there, or on any other site really. It's not hard to do for me. I need something, I go seek it. I don't respond to pop up ads. In real life the closest thing to that reminds me of those street hawkers in Vegas who come up to you every 15 seconds shoving cards and flyers in your face wanting you to come to their casino or nudie show or whatever it is. Annoying as f**k.

In all these years, FB hasn't affected my life in any tangible way I'm aware of. So unless there's an FB army out there going to overthrow our gubmint, I'm pretty much not going to worry about it.

Just my opinion.

It'll freak me out if someone finds a FB page about me cause I don't have one. As it goes they are not in it for you to socialize but to make money. Look at how much a share is worth for a company that really don't have a physical product.
