In my "Catalog of Chevelle & El Camino ID Numbers 1964-87" it states: The V-8....LG4....4BC....305....(these are the trans) M31, M33, MD3, Mv4, M20.... (code)H. The 3 and 4-speed manual transmissions were Saginaws (from Muncie).

IT APPEARS FROM A OTHER RPO CODE SHEET THAT THE MM4 WAS A CODE FOR 4 SPEED MANUAL FROM A CAR WITH A SAGINAW BUT THIS CAR HAS A MM4 AND M20 RPO,

A quick google for "muncie vs saginaw" produces countless pages saying the same thing, that there were no "Muncie" transmissions in GM cars after '74. If there's one in your car, somebody put it there. The M20 RPO Code wouldn't mean you had an M-20 Muncie Transmission. I don't have a book that covers '83 Chevy, but for example my '76-'81 Pontiac parts book shows "MY1-M20" as the code(s?) used for a 4-speed in the "T" cars in '81, which is the Pontiac badged Chevette, T-1000.

and yeah I do see where you're going with the whole "Muncie by Saginaw" business, but 99.9% of the time, if you're refering to a "Muncie" transmission, you're talking about one of the old ones.

As others have already pointed out, it should be a Saginaw transmission. If by some slim chance it is a genuine Muncie (which is EXTREMELY unlikely), and you have rock solid evidence to prove it, you'd have a very rare car (probably one of none).

Stick your head under the car. Unless the whole thing is buried in grease and grime, if you see aluminum it's a Muncie. If it's dark (cast iron), its a Saginaw. My money is on the Saginaw. That's what was in my 1978 Elco SS parts car. I regret dumping it, but I was in Hawaii and the Navy would only ship so much home when I got parole.
