Factory floor shift with column shift column

I want to convert my column shift car to floor shift. My car is an 81. I have the factory linkage, shifter, and column from a 79 H/O. The column needs to be rebuilt so I want to install the shifter and keep my column for now. Can I pull the pin for the gear selector and have the column act like a floor shift column? Or would I be better off just leaving the rod that goes to the column off?

Yes removing the lever will allow the floor shifter to control the shifter bowl of the column..
