The next area after the shifter would be the shift gate. Again not being up to speed on a T56, I would look at what kind of play/movement it has with out a shifter installed. It might just be a wear issue that allows enough play to allow the noise coming from the shifter. It's a part that moves alot so the wear issue might just be the cause.
