My 87 SS with a Edelbrock Q-Jet was very hard to start. Once it started it would start for a few days with a single turn of the key. I installed a Russell In-line Check Valve spliced between the carb and the pump and now it starts with a single twist of the key. Apparently, the carb would drain itself back to the pump and back to the tank via the fuel return line. Problem solved.

I had the same problem. Then I replaced the stock Qjet filter with a stock Qjet filter with check valve. See attached pic. This style od filter is available with check valve for both long and short Qjet stock filters.
