I mentioned the bracket as that was how the factory installed it (atleast on Buick Regals, Chevrolet Monte Carlos and Malibus) which I assume was so the front seat passengers could easily reach the switches for the map lights. You can install it anyway you want.

I agree, as it puts it closer to the front for more practicality. But, like you see, it would require a new hole.

Thanks for the pic!

I got rid of the cheesy Malibu dome light in favor of a Cutlass overhead light with dual map lights.

I have only seen the square style (with the single map light switch) in Oldsmobiles. I have never seen it in a Buick or Chevrolet. I have not had hands on enough of the Pontiac A/G bodies to state what they would have.

Doesn't it mount on the roof support rib. And the duel map light comes across all models for a bunch of years it's like what ever box/shelf they grab them from

I have seen the 'deluxe' dual map light dome light in this 86 Salon and an 83 Regal Limited Wagon, both heavily optioned. Also a 86 brougam cutlass. Passenger side remote rear view mirror, sunroof, rally gauges, rear defog, power antennae ect. BOTH cutlass coupes with sunrooves had the dual map dome light.

My 85 Salon interior had the single map dome light. I honestly didn't know this dual map light existed previously and plan to keep an eye out better in the future.

This is the plate that moves the light forward. As such, the hole in the headliner is also further forward.

Looks like that bracket is present on solid roof cars. The dome light I pulled mounted directly to the rear support on the Sunroof car.

True on both accounts.
I have 2 1980 Cutlass Calais’, one hardtop and one AstroRoof. The hardtop one mounts to the plate as shown, and the Astro/Sunroof cars have it mounted directly to the roof support.
It was my understanding that the more upscale models (Salon, 442 and Calais) got the fancier dual map light style.
I can’t speak to the other makes though.

i have swapped the single map light with double light. used the same bracket and hole in headliner. and will be doing it again. but i don't remember if they used the same stud and screw layout. no experience with the round one.
