I believe this will work for all 78-83 wagons, all brands. The hitch uses six 1/2"x1" bolts, nuts, and lockwashers to attached the ends to the bar. Five locations on the bumper shock mounts use the OEM 8mm x 1.25 bolts - two inboard at the shock ends and one on the passenger and two on the driver side frame ends. I used two 3/8 grade 8 bolts and thick washers on the side plate mid-bolts - need to drill the frame rails in this location - fish the bolts in using a coat hanger and a piece of duct tape and lot of patience.

Fabbing this will nor be hard except for the side plates, which are made from a radius'd 90-degree bend in the plate. You could probably weld two plates at 90 degrees. There is one bend in each side plate to conform to the frame rail contour. Probably make this using a torch and a mallet.

Quinn,
Thank you for posting the various detailed pictures and diagrams of your Class III hitch. It's a really nicely constructed hitch, however, it might be too elaborate for my needs.
You could literally pull a house down with that sucker.

Yah, but NOBODY's going to get to my wagon's gas tank.....!!!!

Seriously, though, you have pattern now, you can lighten it a bit with thinner tubing and side plates...

I couldn't agree with you more about that hitch protecting the gas tank. I appreciate you taking your time to take the individual pics, etc. I suppose I can deviate the plans a little to make it a bit lighter duty.

Very nice! Someone should refine the sketch into a series of CAD files that can have mail order cutouts of the brackets made from.

The problem with a hitch like that is you'll find your friends trying to talk you into testing it out with their stuff in the trailer...

I wonder if a drag strip would let a guy race with a trailer full of stuff? Now it would be REALLY embarrassing to lose to that....

I've been looking for an excuse to ask my wife to teach me SolidWorks. Now might be that time...

I could do it, unfortunately I simply lack the time for another project.
