Bought a water pump off rockauto closeout, cast iron of course for the particular engine, and here's what showed up:

Surface rust inside as you can best see by the impeller, and on the mating surface, but inside the passages as well. What's visible of the shaft inside looks clean.

My concern is both whether system contamination would be an ongoing issue, and, long term gasket seal issues even if that rust is attacked with a scotchbrite and such before adding some rtv to the felt style seal.

It's not an off-the-shelf part for the local stores (useless) who wouldn't give me a firm arrival date for the 'special order we don't keep in stock'...

Thoughts?

I’d throw paint on it and use it.

Yea, I'm not to worried about the outside staying pretty on the engine. Truck itself is a 45 years old unrestored workhorse. SOMEDAY I'd like to fix it up and gathered some parts already. For now reliable is name of the game.

I just never had anything, even old stock, show up with the rust like that where it could enter the system...

Sounds like clean it, seal it, and run it.
