OK, so I need to put the collective experience and knowledge base of this forums' members to work

Here's the mission

Theoretically, you could order the gauge package in a base Malibu in 1981. As you probably know, for 1981, the dash changed and the base cars got an interior color painted dash insert on the right side, whereas the Classics got woodgrain. My question is this...does anyone have proof of what cluster bezel went into base Malibu cars in 1981 with a gauge package?

gnvair ?
anyone?

From what I just checked the wood grain was what all gauge cars got being "AT" Malibu's, "AW" Malibu Classic's/El Camino, "AZ" Monte Carlo. Might suggest the '78-'80 bezel in black with the grain color matched to the dash.

So, did gauge "1AT27" cars get the full woody? Or just the cluster?

I have a wood set, just trying to decide if I want to stay with the painted insert, or go to wood all around. I kinda like the painted insert, but it IS a lot of red. I must be losing my mind, I hate red interiors, but I'm doing it anyway. My buddy says "resale red"

Here's the problem, I have changed the car to column mounted wiper switch, i hate the dash mounted one. Soooooo, that means I need to use a late bezel. Maybe I'll just paint the wood black.

All "AT" Malibu's just list the dash colored grained panels, A/C & non-A/C. the "AW" Malibu's/El Camino's list two styles (each with a A/C & non-A/C), one is the wood grain that is the same as the Monte's, the other I'm thinking is a gloss black to match the non-gauge bezel.
Might not be a bad idea to black out a '82-'85 bezel or go with a '86-'88 set.

Brian I've only ever seen the wood grain bezels in 81 gauge equipped cars as pagrunt pointed out.
If you can figure out a cluster bezel, I've got a black 81 insert and radio bezel. I did once pull the wood grain off a bezel and painted it black.

Just trying to sort this out in my head..

Sweep speedo "AT" models got black-accented cluster bezels, and black radio bezels, with interior colored dash insert panel

Gauge cars apparently? all got woodgrain (burl) cluster bezels and maybe radio and inserts as well?

I have all 3 burl pieces out of an 82 sedan, jury is still out on whether to go with that, or reuse the original red insert and black radio bezel, and make my own black-accent cluster bezel.

pagrunt: can you throw up one of the non-woodgrain "AW" insert part number? My curiousity has been aroused, and I'm going to try gmwiki, and a part number makes it easier to find the right page/book

And thanks to all!

Looks like if it was a Classic/Landau, without gauges, it got black pass side panel , cluster bezel (colormatched perimeter), and radio bezel

With gauges, it was woodgrain panel, cluster bezel, and radio bezel

Base Malibu got painted panel, woodgrain cluster bezel, and woodgrain radio bezel when equipped with gauges. Malibu got painted panel regardless of cluster used, as there is no notations about with or without gauges as there is for the AW cars

Thanks again pagrunt, posting the numbers did the trick
